Class of 2022 Meet Us Monday: Ian

We are counting down to the end of the 2021-2022 school year! It is a particularly bittersweet time for our 8th grade students as they prepare to graduate. To help celebrate and recognize our ILS Class of 2022, we have again launched our “Meet Us Monday” blog series to introduce you to the members of this year’s graduating class.

Each week, we will be sharing interviews that we have done with each of our 8th grade students, in which they share more about their favorite ILS memories and traditions, words of wisdom they’ve received over the years, and other reflections from their years here with us at ILS. We hope that you will enjoy these reflections, and join with us in congratulating and celebrating these students!

Meet Us Monday: Ian, ILS Class of 2022

1. How long have you attended ILS?

Since 4th grade. It’s been lit!

2. To what house do you belong, and how have you developed as a person by being involved in it?

I am in House Ambrose, and I’m a house captain. By being picked as captain, I’ve become more responsible and more of a leader to younger kids in my house. For competitions, you have to pep them up, and for meetings you have to make sure they are informed about what’s going on.

3. What was your favorite House competition?

I don’t know if this counts, but Lutheran Schools Week – it’s just one week with almost a new competition every day. In prior years, Ambrose has often been third, but this year we have been dominating. It feels good.

4. What is your favorite ILS memory? (Or, which ILS tradition will you remember the most?)

My favorite tradition that I think I’ll remember the most, is Science Camp, and that’s probably also my favorite memory. Pizza days are also some of my favorite memories. I know in high school I won’t have recess, so that might be one of my favorite memories as well.

5. What subject have you studied that has most inspired you, and how? What subject have you studied that most challenged you to grow or change?

Math has inspired me the most just because it’s everywhere. It’s in taxes, it’s in sports, it really is everywhere. You need to know math. It’s enjoyable for me, and I feel like it comes easy to me.

History challenges me because I have never been all that interested in it. It can be confusing because of how many things have actually happened. How do you make sense of it all? Just take good notes in class and pay attention during discussions.

6.  Where will you attend High School?

Bishop Ireton. I feel really good and excited about it. I’m looking forward to soccer and maybe basketball too. It’s going to be fun to play competitively against other schools.

 7. What will you miss the most about ILS?

I will miss my friends that aren’t headed to BI with me. I’m also going to miss recess because I feel like I generally need it every day. All the boys in my class are like brothers to me so I’m going to miss them a lot. If it weren’t for my mom and dad, I never would have been able to come here.

8. How has a teacher impacted your life personally in a way you will never forget?

Mr. Hageman has impacted my life personally by making me be more mature. He’s teaching us to become more like young men and less like kids. If you’re going to do something dumb that seems like a great idea, and you hear Mr. Hageman’s voice in your mind, take that as a reminder not to do it.
