Class of 2022 Meet Us Monday: Kate

It’s our final countdown to the end of the 2021-2022 school year! It is a particularly bittersweet time for our 8th grade students as they prepare to graduate. To help celebrate and recognize our ILS Class of 2022, we have again launched our “Meet Us Monday” blog series to introduce you to the members of this year’s graduating class.

Each week, we are sharing interviews that we have done with each of our 8th grade students, in which they share more about their favorite ILS memories and traditions, words of wisdom they’ve received over the years, and other reflections from their years here with us at ILS. We hope that you will enjoy these reflections, and join with us in congratulating and celebrating these students!

Meet Us Monday: Kate, ILS Class of 2022

1. How long have you attended ILS?

I have attended ILS since Jr. Kindergarten – so 10 years in total.

2. To what house do you belong, and how have you developed as a person by being involved in it?

I belong to House Athanasius. I am currently a House Captain. I have developed leadership skills, such as organizing events and lead the members of the House. It provides an opportunity to get close to the younger students. Being in the House brings you joy as you watch people have fun and experience things I experienced as a younger student.

3. What was your favorite House competition?

This is hard because we have had so many competitions. I like Field Day a lot – it’s the most exciting because there are so many different activities. I love the water balloons and sponge races and there is just a thrill of competition throughout the day. You have to work hard to win. I also enjoy Ultimate Frisbee.

4. What is your favorite ILS memory? (Or, which ILS tradition will you remember the most?)

There are so many memories. I really used to like going on bus rides to field trips. We would sing songs and enjoy the ride. Science Camp is great. I love outdoor chapel, watching the sun go down and having the opportunity to bond in a little more free setting. Our lunchtime story group of Brody, Newman and Leo is a lot of fun. Caroline and I just like to sit and listen.

5. What subject have you studied that has most inspired you, and how? What subject have you studied that most challenged you to grow or change?

My most inspirational subject is definitely History. I love History and someday I would like to make a political difference in the way I speak. You can put ideals into action in the way you speak. Miss C. Davis teaches us that. Ideas about how the world works are very powerful and I have always been interested in speaking in an influential way.

A subject that has challenged me is Mathematics. I’m not the best at Math. Miss D. Davis has told me that I can do well when I take my time. She has been a help with my struggles in completing equations. You need to do things slowly and carefully, which is how you have to approach Algebra.

6.  Where will you attend High School?

I am attending high school at Bishop Ireton. I am aiming to play Varsity Volleyball. I also want to swim and run track. I am excited to attend BI and start a new chapter.

 7. What will you miss the most about ILS?

I will miss the most that we are all academically at a similar place. Here everyone knows similar things and has been taught the same way. When I talk with fellow students we can share so much because we’re read the same books and discussed them together.

I will miss my class, of course. I have been with them for a long time. I love my class and I will miss the ones that aren’t going to attend Bishop Ireton.

8. How has a teacher impacted your life personally in a way you will never forget?

Miss C. Davis has made me understand a lot of truly beautiful literature in a way that no other teacher could do. She shows me the links and connections to Truth, everyday life, and metaphors and how we can use books to understand life.

Mr. Hageman has made me understand History so well. By reading so many documents and speeches from political figures, we have been able to truly understand American and the world.
