What is your favorite thing about ILS?
Something I specifically appreciate about ILS is the emphasis on beauty in our spaces. When I show my family and friends my classroom, the remark on how peaceful a place it must be. While I would describe few days in middle school as "peaceful," the school is a beautiful place and I enjoy spending time there.
What book are you currently reading?
I'm always reading multiple books at once. Right now it's Til We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis, Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter mysteries, and Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. The Brothers Karamazov is perpetually on my summer reading list, but as usual, I got half way through it before school started. Perhaps this will be the year I finish it.
What was your favorite thing you did this summer?
I took a road trip around the US to visit family and saw favorite places and new things. Favorite places include the Crazy Horse monument in SD, Yosemite National Park and Los Angeles beaches in CA, and the stately Redwoods. New places and sights were the Corn Palace in SD, The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in TN, and spray-painting cars at Cadillac Ranch in TX.
What is one place you would like to visit but have not yet been?
Rivendell. In this world: so many places. I've tried to visit Europe for the past two summers and have been thwarted each time. I particularly want to visit the UK, Italy, Greece, and Spain. Singapore is also high on my list.
What was your favorite subject/class when you were in school?
Horseback riding. Followed by Math.
What was your favorite book as a child? What is your favorite book to teach?
Lord of the Rings. And: Lord of the Rings. :)
What is your favorite scripture verse?
"For you are a chosen race, a royal people, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, now that you have been called out of darkness and into his marvelous light." 1 Peter 2:9
