We are bringing back our Meet Us Monday Blog series as we have a few new faces joining us at ILS for the second half of the year!
Today, we invite you go get to know one of our two Hillsdale Interns, Miss Claire Wilkinson, with her recent “Meet Us Monday” interview.
Miss Wikinson is a student at Hillsdale College and will be interning with us at Immanuel for the remainder of the school year.
What year are you at Hillsdale College & what are you studying?
I am a junior majoring in Classics and minoring in Graphic Design.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up mostly in Jackson, Mississippi, but I attended high school in Greenville, South Carolina.
What are you most looking forward to about interning at ILS?
Having been a student for so long, I’m excited to see what school looks like from the other perspective. I hope to carry on some of the things I’ve learned and learn as much as I can in the process.
What book(s) are you currently reading?
I am reading a book called The 48 Rules of Power, which is a certainly Machiavellian book, but it’s also a fascinating description of people and how they work. I’m also working through the Bible, since I realized recently that I’ve never read it all the way through before. This may seem to be a strange combination, and in a sense, it is, but together, these two books offer a rather thorough description of human nature: the former offering real historical examples the way people act, the latter explaining why in the context of God, His creation, and the Fall. While on it’s own, the first book is a rather hollow, depressing read, it looks forward to God and our need for redemption, whether or not its author intended it (and I don’t think he did).
What is one place you would like to visit but have not yet been?
Rome—I’ve already been to Greece, so I think I should complete the set.
What was your favorite book as a child?
I really enjoyed a book series from the 90s called Animorphs. In hindsight, it wasn’t the most beautifully written, nor do I agree with the author’s worldview, but as an aspiring author, I’m still impressed with the story structure and world building.
What is your favorite scripture verse?
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up, according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
—Ephesians 4:29
This verse reflects the Bible idea that it is not enough to turn away from evil (i.e. not say bad things); you must turn towards God also do good (i.e. build others up). It’s a little microcosm explanation of how we should live as Christians!
